Support for Jewish Military Personnel: High Holiday Services Available on Shalom TV

Here is a press release from Shalom TV:

For the third consecutive year, Shalom TV is televising Jewish High Holiday services to more than 40 million cable homes across America along with placing Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur programs online for Jewish service members stationed around the world.

"Our High Holiday services are one of the most important features of our programming year," noted Shalom TV president Rabbi Mark S. Golub.

"Jews should always experience the holidays with a Jewish community in prayer, song, and companionship, and we are honored to share services with men and women who are unable to attend a synagogue during the Holy Days, as well as addressing the individual needs of Jews who sometimes feel alone."

Among the services carried live on Shalom TV (and also available On Demand) are Torah readings and the call of the Shofar [ram's horn] on Rosh Hashanah, the Kol Nidre prayer service on Yom Kippur Eve, the Yizkor memorial service on Yom Kippur, and d'rashes (commentaries and thoughts for the holidays).

Shalom TV's services, which are eclectic and egalitarian in Jewish observance, also contain a special feature that Rabbi Golub feels is especially important.

"Whenever there is congregational participation, the Hebrew is available on screen for our viewers to read, along with transliteration and the English translation," he explains. "I want people to feel they can actually participate in our services, not simply watch them on television."

Services will be available on cable systems in the Shalom TV "Judaism" section, and online on Shalom TV's Web site beginning September 14, leading into both Rosh Hashanah (September 16-18) and Yom Kippur (September 25-26). A listing of Shalom TV's channel number (by cable system) is posted at www.shalomtv.com under the "Find Us" link.

Shalom TV is available as free Video On Demand on virtually every cable system in America. The Shalom TV channel can be seen on select television providers and on Ruku, and on computer and mobile devices by visiting the Shalom TV Web site.

Preparing Rosh Hashanah Packages Now for Deployed Troops

(Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year in the fall. This year it begins on the evening of Friday, Sept. 18. It is a holiday for which Jews attend synagogue services.)

Dear Friend,

We are writing to you because of your past support of ProjectMOT. As you may know we sent almost 100 holiday care packages to our deployed Jewish troops last year. This year for Passover we sent 114. All were well received and enjoyed by our brave heroes in their various parts of the world.

If you have a deployed serviceman or woman who will be away during the holidays, please send us their military address so we can send them a care package.

We are now preparing the High Holiday packages which we will be sending at the end of August, and have orders for 80 at this point. We already have blank greeting cards for them to send home, some candy and cookies, but we really want to make these boxes special.

We have a web page with information about what we are doing and our wish list and invite you to have a visit: www.rimmon.com/ProjectMOT.htm

See the wish list now to learn how you can help.

New Year Greetings to U.S. Jewish Servicemen and Servicewomen Wherever You Are Serving

The Jewish New Year holiday of Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown this year on Monday evening, September 29. It’s a two-day holiday that ends at sundown this year on Wednesday evening, October 1. For those of you who don’t know, this is a solemn religious holiday, although we do have festive meals with family and friends besides attending synagogue services.

(For an explanation of this Jewish holiday and other Jewish holidays, see the book SEASONS FOR CELEBRATION by me and Rabbi Karen L. Fox on Amazon at http://snipurl.com/jewishholidaybook)

On Rosh Hashanah Jews all over the world will ponder “who shall live and who shall die … who shall come to a timely end and who shall come to an untimely end.”

Yesterday morning at synagogue services I gave a short drash (talk) about the Jewish servicemen and servicewomen who this year will ponder these questions in Iraq or Afghanistan. I said in part:

And while we will chant this prayer in the comfort of our air conditioned sanctuary in the midst of a country that allows Jews to openly and freely celebrate their religion – there are Jewish servicemen and servicewomen who will chant this same prayer amidst the violence of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some of these deployed Jewish military personnel have traveled from their bases in Iraq to other bases where the too-few Jewish chaplains in Iraq or the Jewish lay leaders will lead Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Some Jewish personnel will be on missions that prevent their getting time off for the High Holidays.

In Afghanistan, some Jewish personnel will choose to stay at their own bases, totally unable to attend any Jewish service, because the risk of traveling to the bases where Jewish services are held is too great. The trip could cost their lives and the lives of their escorts.

For those of you who would like to know more about Jews who serve in the military, go to www.jewsingreen.com and read the last few compelling posts. And for those of you who would like to support all U.S. military personnel who are serving now – and their families – go to my website www.mrslieutenant.com for information on several organizations that help military families.

May this coming year be one that brings us closer to peace for all people.
