8th Annual Holiday Love Campaign for Our Troops Thanks to eMailOurMilitary with Your Help

This email I received is so important because Trish Forant and eMailOurMilitary are such a wonderful support for our troops. Read this email and act now.

--------------------
Subject: Happy Holidays! A Holiday Newsletter from eMOM

We're just 7 days away from Christmas!

We're hoping you haven't forgotten our guys and gals serving across the globe this holiday season. We've got some great ways you can show your support no matter what your financial situation or schedule is.

We haven't talked about it much but this year was the hardest yet for eMail Our Military. After 8 years of supporting our troops we've had to cut back our hours of operation to accommodate for our volunteers work schedules.

We lost quite a few volunteers because of the economy. No one at eMail Our Military takes a paycheck and there just wasn't enough time for people to volunteer AND manage their work schedules just to pay the bills.

Sadly, this is also the 1st year we weren't able to send out massive amounts of care packages to our troops in time for Christmas. Financially, ff things don't change dramatically in 2010 we may be forced to close our doors forever.

It's been a wonderful 8 years and we're still optimistic that we'll get the support we need as an organization to keep supporting our military in 2010 and beyond - we'll definitely need your help.

8TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY LOVE CAMPAIGN - HOLIDAY MAIL TO OUR TROOPS

This holiday season you can make the holidays a little brighter for our troops overseas and stationed far from home. Consider becoming a Postage Patriot or a Care Package Patriot. Starting at just $5 you can make a huge difference for our troops: www.facebook.com/l/a7bb1;emailourmilitary2008.chipin.com/holiday-mail-for-our-troops

MESSAGES TO THE MILITARY

We're still hopeful that many of you will take a moment to register to send a message of support to our troops in time for the holidays.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Though we still don't have our official online eMOM registration form up and running, we've got an online registration form that will get the job done! If you've been waiting for online registration now is the time to sign up. We can't leave this up for too long because it isn't tied to our database but we want to make sure that everyone who wants to email our troops has an opportunity to do so this holiday season.

If registering isn't your thing then why not send a one time message of support to our military instead? You can email a message of support to Messages@http://www.facebook.com/l/a7bb1;eMailOurMilitary.com and your message may appear on our website, blog, facebook page or in one of our care packages to our military!

Her Husband Is Among the First Boots on the Ground

Trish Forant of eMailOurMilitary is sponsoring on her blog a series of guest posts about supporting the troops.

I want to share with you the October 28th guest post by Erin Nash, who blogs at www.becauseifeellikewriting.blogspot.com and whose husband is "a special operations Soldier and is always among the first boots on the ground wherever needed in the world."

Go on over to http://snipurl.com/emomguestpost to read a soldier's wife's thoughts about supporting our troops.

And, remember, I'm sponsoring an Honor a Veteran event on Facebook at http://snipurl.com/mrslieutenant and Trish is sponsoring a holiday program at www.emailourmilitary.com. If you're able, please participate in both projects.

USO Supporting the Troops: Every Wife Dreads ...

I have to admit that the first thought that comes to my mind when I think of the USO is scenes of USO-sponsored dances in World War II films. So I found the email from the USO asking for a donation particularly moving as it included the text of a letter from a wife whose husband was deployed to Iraq:

Every wife dreads the day we have to put our husbands "back on the plane." Yesterday I thought I would be all alone in this huge airport ... that I would be left standing with my six-year old son, crying and watching my husband, yet again, walk away from me.

I was wrong. Your USO volunteers were wonderful.

They took the time to talk to my husband and tell him that they were proud of him ... that they wished him well ... and to come home soon. They also took the time to play with my son, and one lady gave him a stuffed bear which he slept with last night.

And when it came time for my husband to walk away from me, I suddenly found myself surrounded by volunteers. They didn't have to stand there with me and help me through my toughest moment ... but they did. I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done, and all that you do. PLEASE keep up the wonderful work.

After reading this wife's letter, I went to the website at www.uso.org and read this introduction:

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress — and enduring style of USO delivery — is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military.

The USO currently operates more than 130 centers worldwide, including 10 mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Overseas centers are located in Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Qatar, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guam, and Kuwait. Service members and their families visit USO centers more than 5.3 million times each year. The USO is the way the American public supports the troops.

There are many ways to support the troops. Those of you who regularly read this blog know that I particularly support www.emailourmilitary.com. Yet it's also important to know about other organizations that support the troops.

In this coming holiday season, support our troops through whichever organizations you choose. Just support them!

UPDATE: Just after I posted the above, I opened today's issue of Daily Variety and saw a full-page USO ad that read:

The morale you raise the most may just be your own. Experience the greatest audience in the world on a USO Celebrity Tour. Call Bernie Rone at 703-908-6480.

I'd forgotten that this is something else the USO does. And if you're a celebrity performer -- here's another way to support the troops.

And, oh yes, the tagline for the USO ad is: Until Every One Comes Home

Soldiers’ Angels Needs Help for Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

Soldiers’ Angels is an organization benefiting U.S. troops that I have previously blogged about. And on my book’s website at www.mrslieutenant.com – in the section on military organizations that support military families – there’s a listing for Solders’ Angels.

So when my husband read in one of the milblogs he follows – www.blackfive.net – the blog post with the title “Soldiers’ Angels Could Use Some Help,” I offered to post again about the organization. You can read the actual post at www.blackfive.net/main/2008/07/soldiers-angels.html. And at www.soldiersangels.org you can read about what Soldiers’ Angels does to support the troops.

To me, the most moving tribute to the work of Soldiers’ Angels is the organization’s motto May No Soldier Go Unloved. There are men and women deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan who get NO mail, NO packages, nothing. Put yourself in their shoes and then you’ll know why this is an important organization to support.

Of course there are many other organization supporting military troops and their families that are very worthwhile. One I recently learned about (and have not yet blogged about) is eMail Our Military. The motto of this organization is Supporting Our Military, One eMail At A Time. Military personnel register and are matched with civilians who have registered to send and show their support. Why Choose Us

We’re original! We were the 1st organization to step in after 9/11 when force protection concerns threatened to keep the support from getting to our troops.

Our Code of Ethics and the security measures we have in place help us to support our troops safely. We require all of our participants to register with us, we work directly with many military commands and we never publicize the names and addresses of our service members, ships or units on the web.

Many of our military service members overseas have limited or no web access. Therefore they may never see messages posted on internet websites. They do however, have eMail and look forward to hearing news from home.

Testimonials

Read some of our testimonials from the troops we’ve supported and our members. More...

Besides supporting Soldiers’ Angels NOW, go check out www.mailourmilitary.com.

And remember not to throw away your old cell phones. Donate them to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com, a project started by two teens.

And as I always say, supporting the troops is not about whether you are for or against the war in Iraq and the fighting in Afghanistan. This is about showing support for the men and women who have voluntarily joined our military forces to defend us.
